A barrel of optimism…🌊 In 1910, the Magdalen Islands' telegraph line snapped, leaving them isolated and cut off. To reconnect, they rigged up a molasses barrel with a metal sail and iron rudder to send their plea for help to Cape Breton. Decades later, several of the people involved reunited to reminisce about those events over a miniature model of that contraption they had built, called a ponchon.

One of the letters enclosed in the ponchon, written by Vergine Chevrier Painchaud wrote:

“I entrust these lines to the randomness of the waves, although honestly the likelihood that they’ll arrive at their destination is a slim reality. If necessity is the mother of joyful invention, then what audacious enterprises does it take to break the chains of a long winter captivity?”

The audacious ponchon did in fact arrive at its destination: Cape Breton. There they were discovered by local man who took it upon himself to mail all 125 letters enclosed inside – and paid the postage out of his own pocket!

After six weeks of having their communication cut off with the rest of Canada, finally the government was alerted to the fact that 6,000 of their residents had been missing the whole time.

Reviews From Our Guests

“What A Find…”

“Immaculate cottages, well maintained and spotless. We had everything we needed to feel right at home for our 4 night visit. The grounds are so well groomed. The cottages all face the lake. It’s so pleasant to just sit on the deck and take in the views. You couldn’t get a more central location to visit Cape Breton Island. Thank you Renie for making the 4 of us feel so welcome!” – Ann P.
